After considerable amounts of constuctive motivation I have been moved and impressed to write my first blog for Food 4 Da Brain. It has been a long time coming but heh, it’s better late than not at all!

Hi.  For all those who don’t know who I am my name is Nkanyezi which is a name given to me by my South African friend back in 2002.  I am one of the co-founders of F4DB along with  Annette (a video of Annette talking about F4DB will be posted soon).  My very dear friend and loved one, Pastor Hypolite was also instrumental in setting up the programme.

RIGHT… We will get to all the juicy stuff like ‘how F4DB got started, where the name came from, how long we’ve been running for, our ups and downs, our triumphs and of course our losses. Right now though I want to share a F4DB success story.  F4DB returned after a short break back to Moorland Road for our Tuesday session 22nd August 2007.  That day the topic was about RESPECT; how you earn it and how you receive it.  This generated a meaty discussion and highlighted some possible reasons why some behaviours exist in our community.  (More of this later!) The discussion finished at 9 o’clock but four young men very popular around the area stayed behind and began to ask questions.  They asked questions about God, the Bible, Jesus, the state of the world and what God is going to do about some of the problems they face on the streets as well as global issues like war, famine etc.  The question and answer session went on until 10:45pm and resulted in 3 of these young men asking for Jesus to come into their hearts and begin a relationship and to show them His power!!! AMEN, AMEN AMEN!

It was an inspired evening that injected hope back into the Moorland Estate area and confirmed in my mind that F4DB is not only an answer for the community but the answer for it. We might make pigeon steps but God moves in leaps and bounds. Look out Brixton!  Look out South London!  God is fighting, one of his weapons is F4DB.

The programme has had a bit of a slow start this summer but this week has brought good news.  We will have a new home – location will be revealed soon!

We started by laying down some ground rules.   You know the sort of thing, no swearing, no hoodies and participation in discussion before meals.  Nothing to difficult but, by the end of the session, it was clear that we needed to add one about mobile phones.

The topic under discussion was, knowing God.  There were some pertinent responses showing that most of the people there had a clear idea who God is.  On the other hand some doubted His ability to stop bad things happening while others questioned whether His role in creation was a myth or not.  It certainly got them all thinking and talking.  A big shout out to Jermaine for reframing the story of The Lost Sheep, The Lost Coin and the Prodigal Son.  He did an excellent job of making it relevant to 21st century inner city living and kept everyone’s attention.

More next week.

I have only just manage to get to sit down to let you know about the last meeting of F4DB.  The evening started out quiet as the young people who normally come around were playing football.  They started to arrive just as I was feeling the affects of a long day.  I didn’t get to see whether peace was maintained as they played the game ‘Articulate’!

There were lots of help this week to help out and hope that volunteers keep on coming back.  More on the programme next week.
